Marijuana Pros and Cons

One of the most hotly debated topics in today’s politics in the legalization of marijuana. While there are several states that have legalized medical marijuana and a handful that have legalized recreational marijuana, the national government hasn’t passed any legislation on the subject. While many people have their own stance on the matter, it’s important to understand both sides of the story in order to make an informed decision.

First, though, it’s necessary to outline the difference between medical and recreational marijuana. There are certain types of cannabis that are very low in THC, the component of marijuana that creates the “high” effect. Research is still being conducted on the success of marijuana in a medical form, but it’s become used to combat seizures, epilepsy, and even chemotherapy-induced nausea. These benefits, as well as other possible ones that have yet to be discovered, easily display why medicinal marijuana can be beneficial. But why should recreational marijuana be legalized?

Simply put, many people don’t view a high as being a problem. It is often compared to being drunk in terms of the capability for danger; much riskier if you are high or drunk behind the wheel, but otherwise you aren’t doing any major damage. In fact, some people argue that the effects of marijuana are more positive than those of alcohol because being high often causes a more relaxed feeling, instead of possible aggression from being drunk.

The argument against marijuana, however, is based around a lack of knowledge on the subject. As I mentioned before, what is truly known about marijuana’s long term effects, positive or negative, is minimal. Thus, those fighting the progression of marijuana laws fear the science that we haven’t yet discovered. Another defense is the possibility of dangerous driving from someone being high, putting others in danger.
